NCNOLT Federal/State Recognition Status
as of 1/1/06
Even though our Tribe has received proclamations from Arkansas and
Missouri Governors and Legislative Resolutions over the years, neither
state has passed the necessary legislation recognizing Indian
Tribes in those states. This legislation would require the states
to set up "Indian Commissions" to maintain relationships between
the Tribes and the States. We continue to work to get the necessary
laws established in Missouri, Arkansas, Kansas, Oklahoma.
Chief Beverly Baker announced at the NCNOLT Reunion June 24, 2006, in Hallsville, Missouri:
"After researching our history for over 20 years to try and meet Bureau of Indian Affairs qualifications for recognition, the Northern Cherokee Nation of the Old Louisiana Territory feels this has finally been accomplished, and our petition has now been submitted to them for our re-recognition." |
